Why we use positive reinforcement when overcoming behavioural problems in our animal companions.

by Cara Williams MA - Animal Behaviourist

Behavioural scientists have shown the different consequences of positive reinforcement and punishing techniques (including negative reinforcement) when training animals:

Consequences of Positive Reinforcement
• Accelerated learning
• Good problem solving ability
• No signs of stress during training
• Behaviour problems are solved quickly
• Freedom of fear
• Animals become consciously aware of behaviour that is being reinforced
• Animals wants to learn
• Creativity and initiative are intrinsic by products

Consequences of Punishment and Negative Reinforcement
• Learning can stop altogether
• Poor problem solving ability
• Signs of stress during training
• Behaviour problems take longer to solve
• Presence of fear
• Animals are often unaware of what behaviour will be punished next
• Animals may stop wanting to learn
• Suppression of natural behaviours are an intrinsic by product

The benefits of positive reinforcement far outweigh those of punishing techniques. As a result, when we solve behavioural problems:

• The problem is likely to be solved much more quickly
• The problem solving process is less stressful for both you and your animal companion
• Behaviour change is likely to be lasting
